Prayers of the People
We gather as creatures fashioned by the life giving hand of God. Let us open our hearts to this creative and compassionate touch as we pray: O God, hear our prayer.
This week, July 1 we celebrate Canada’s 154th birthday! We also remember and acknowledge the The Battle of the Somme which was one of the largest battles of World War I, with more than 1,000,000 men wounded or killed, making it one of the bloodiest battles in human history. We remember places in the world that still face war, bloodshed and death. For this we pray: O God, hear our prayer.
You fashioned a world abundant with life and life giving creatures. Inspire us to fashion with you a world that promotes fullness of life for all peoples. Today we pray for Osaka, Japan and their bishop, for the parishes of Labrador West and Lake Melville and for Samuel our bishop. For this we pray: O God, hear our prayer.
As Jesus compassionately responded to Jairus’ need, help us to heed the hungry, the homeless, the unemployed, and the elderly in our midst. We give Thanks for those who contributed to The Gathering Place “Welcome Home” project. We pray for their staff, volunteers and all who avail of their services. Today we remember the various organizations and volunteers who work to meet their needs and concerns. May we never contribute to their pain and hunger. For this we pray: O God, hear our prayer.
We give thanks for leisure time and rest. We pray for those who are vacationing and visiting this summer that they may have a time of recreation and refreshment. For this we pray: O God, hear our prayer.
As the earth nourishes and sustains us, may we nourish and sustain one another in justice and peace. For this we pray: O God, hear our prayer.
We hover in anticipation of your healing presence, generous God. We pray for all who are ill, especially those on the Ascension Prayer Cycle, empower us all to wait and trust. For this we pray: O God, hear our prayer.
For ourselves in this assembly, all who are impacted by the Pandemic, those undergoing testing, those who received positive results, those in isolation, all business that will reopen and for the tourism industry, all believing in our every deed the good news, that after turmoil and strife, the world may be free of this virus, For this we pray: O God, hear our prayer.
We pray for those who have gone before us in faith and are now at rest, remembering Elsie Hynes. May God continue to uphold their family and friends as they mourn their death. For this we pray:
O God, hear our prayer.
Pray Together
Gracious God, often we resist your gentle and compassionate hand in our lives. Open our hearts to your life giving touch, and may we trust the growth of your dominion in the world. We ask this through Jesus Christ, who is our life and our hope.

Almighty God,
you have taught us through your Son
that love fulfils the law.
May we love you with all our heart,
all our soul, all our mind, and all our strength,
and may we love our neighbour as ourselves;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever. AMEN
A Reading from the Second Book of Samuel
After the death of Saul, when David had returned from defeating the Amalekites, David remained two days in Ziklag. David intoned this lamentation over Saul and his son Jonathan. (He ordered that The Song of the Bow be taught to the people of Judah; it is written in the Book of Jashar.) He said: Your glory, O Israel, lies slain upon your high places! How the mighty have fallen! Tell it not in Gath, proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon; or the daughters of the Philistines will rejoice, the daughters of the uncircumcised will exult. You mountains of Gilboa, let there be no dew or rain upon you, nor bounteous fields! For there the shield of the mighty was defiled, the shield of Saul, anointed with oil no more. From the blood of the slain, from the fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan did not turn back, nor the sword of Saul return empty. Saul and Jonathan, beloved and lovely! In life and in death they were not divided; they were swifter than eagles, they were stronger than lions. O daughters of Israel, weep over Saul, who clothed you with crimson, in luxury, who put ornaments of gold on your apparel. How the mighty have fallen in the midst of the battle! Jonathan lies slain upon your high places. I am distressed for you, my brother Jonathan; greatly beloved were you to me; your love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women. How the mighty have fallen, and the weapons of war perished! 2 SAMUEL 1:1, 17-27

Psalm 130
Out of the depths have I called to you, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice;
let your ears consider well the voice of my supplication.
If you, Lord, were to note what is done amiss,
O Lord, who could stand?
For there is forgiveness with you;
therefore you shall be feared.
I wait for the Lord; my soul waits for him;
in his word is my hope.
My soul waits for the Lord, more than watchmen for the morning,
more than watchmen for the morning.
O Israel, wait for the Lord,
for with the Lord there is mercy;
With him there is plenteous redemption,
and he shall redeem Israel from all their sins.
Rescue us, O God for whom we wait, from the depths of depression and despair. May we trust in your mercy, know the fullness of your redemption, and share in the glory of your kingdom; through our Saviour Jesus Christ. AMEN
