Last Sunday, February 12, was the Queen’s College Appeal Sunday.  It is a time set aside each year to give thanks for the life and ministry of Queen’s College and for the staff, faculty, and students.’ Let us pray in particular for any persons we know who are currently studying theology and actively discerning a call to ministry.

‘Your financial support to the College will be a great help in ensuring that there will be competent faculty and all resources needed so that there will continually be graduates to take the message of the Gospel to wherever there is a need.’ (There are envelopes at the entrance of the church if you would like to make a donation at any time.)

A few reminders for you:

  • The annual World Day of Prayer Service will be held on Friday, March 3, at the First United Church, Mount Pearl, at 7 p.m.  All are welcome and refreshments will be served after the service.
  • Lent begins next Wednesday, February 22, at which time there will be an Ash Wednesday service at 7 p.m. with the imposition of ashes. By the way, each Wednesday during the Lenten Season there will be an evening service (BAS/Evening Prayer) at 7.
  • In connection with these services, we are looking for readers.  If you are interested in reading at any of those services, please sign the sheet located at the entrance of the church or call the church office.  Thank you!
  • Please remember that your tax receipts for the 2022 year are available at the entrance to the church.  If they aren’t picked up by February 28, they will be mailed to the address that is on file.
  • The Food Bank is still in great need.  Please aim to pick up an item or two when you do your grocery shopping and place it in the food bank box at the entrance to the church.
  • By now you will have read Dean Bellamy’s Lenten letter (available on the Parish’s website, the Parish’s facebook page, and from church).  He informs us of the Lenten Project for this year, a project that focuses on The Association for New Canadians in its work of helping people who have come to live in Canada. Of course, we especially think of the refugees from the terrible war in the Ukraine.  They are asking our help in providing backpacks and school supplies for children.  A representative will visit on Palm Sunday to collect our gifts.  Thanks for supporting this worthy cause.
  • An important notice for all youth group members!! Your meeting will be held this Friday, February 17 at 7 p.m.  It’s movie night, complete with popcorn and drinks!  Rev’d Barbara is looking forward to seeing you there.
  • If you would like to contact the Parish Rector/Priest-in-Charge, you may call 769-2533.
  • Do you know that there has been a request from the Provost of Queen’s College, Dr. Joanne Mercer, that they would like the Parish of the Ascension to host the Queen’s College Convocation and Reception on May 11, 2023?  Further details and volunteer opportunities will be made known to you later.

That’s it, folks! Aim to stay inside and stay warm until this storm passes.

Blessings,
Jean (On behalf of the Ascension)
