Ascension News (January 12, 2024)

This is the Epiphany Season in the church’s year.

As the ‘wonderous star’ led the wise men to the Christ Child, may the light of the ‘wonderous star’ guide you along life’s pathways as you enter the New Year.

I read a quote this week, a quote to take to heart as we head into 2024. “The future lies before you, like a field of fallen snow.  Be careful how you tread it, for every step will show.”

  • Ascension Café will open again on Sunday, January 21, following the 8:30 BCP service.  This ‘gathering’ is an excellent place to chat with your parish family, make new friends, and enjoy good food at the same time.
  • I know that many of you contributed generously to help the foodbank during Christmas, and, as you know, all donations were gratefully received.  However, the need for food items continues throughout the year.  Your continued help is most appreciated.
  • The afternoon card party takes place Monday coming, January 15.  What do you need to have a fun afternoon starting at 2 p.m.? Just your own cards and baskets, and $6 to play!! Enjoy!
  • Please take note!! The next Confirmation preparation class will be on Sunday, January 28, at 2 p.m.  Candidates are reminded to make every effort to attend regular Sunday Service.
  • The Bishop’s New Year’s message is available at the church’s entrance, or you can read it online at
  • There is another free take-out meal available this evening for anyone who could use a nice hot meal. Meals are available at the entrance to the Church of the Good Shepherd from 5 to 6 p.m.
  • Some 2024 church envelopes are still waiting to be picked up – at the church’s entrance.  It would be appreciated if some of you could take a few extra ones to deliver. Thanks, in anticipation of your help.
  • Don’t forget to RSVP by January 25, 2024, if you plan to attend the Diocesan Anglican Men’s Association service and dinner meeting at St. Philip’s Anglican Church on Sunday, January 28. You can contact Gary King at 709-691-3902 or Harvey Hiscock at 709-697-5280.

That’s it, folks!
It’s cold outside this week, so layer up, and stay safe!
Jean (On behalf of the Ascension)
