Baptism

Baptism is a sacred and joyful event that families can share with our larger parish family. It is a sign of new life in Christ and unites Christ with His people.  When we are baptized, a commitment is made to follow Jesus Christ. The Baptismal service includes Godparents, Parents, and the family members along with our parish family who all commit to support the newly baptized.

The Anglican Church baptizes all followers into the family of God; infants, children, and adults alike. A home visit by the Associate Priest prior to the Baptismal ceremony is normally conducted to share the details of the event, and to prepare everyone for what to expect during the service.

Please contact the Church office below for any questions.  All are welcome.

Confirmation

In Confirmation we express a commitment to Christ, and receive strength from the Holy Spirit through prayer and the laying on of hands by a Bishop.

Confirmation at The Parish of the Ascension is a faith journey for young people age 11 years and older. Registration takes place on Welcome Back Sunday in September. Young people must be 11 years of age or older by December 31st of that calendar year.

Deciding to be confirmed means that you are ready to take on promises that were made for you by your parents and godparents at your baptism. These promises and other aspects of the church are explored and instructed throughout the confirmation classes. The service of Confirmation usually takes place around Ascensiontide, in May of each year.

Classes take place on Sunday afternoons from 2 – 4 pm during the months of October to May, exception being December. These classes are mandatory for all candidates to attend and follow the confirmation program. If classes have to be rescheduled because of unforeseen circumstances, there will be make-up classes at another time. We have a team of confirmation teachers who instruct the classes and help the candidates to become members of our church family.

All candidates are also required to attend ONE Sunday service each Sunday until the time of confirmation. This is an excellent way for the candidates to learn more about worshipping at The Ascension and they are also encouraged to participate in the various church services throughout the year.

Topics of Instruction

  • Holy Baptism
  • Holy Eucharist
  • Commandments, Creeds and the Lord’s Prayer
  • The Holy Scripture and Prayer
  • The Church
  • Symbols, Vestments and Furnishings
  • Seasons and Principal Feasts
  • The Sacraments

Our confirmation candidates also participate in several outreach programs during the year such as assisting with the Seniors Christmas event, filling Christmas hampers, serving the meal at the PWRDF luncheon in Lent, creating the Easter garden on Palm Sunday and helping with the various community projects throughout the year.

Funerals

Funerals are celebrations of life of our love done in the midst of our sorrow. Once the arrangements have been made with the funeral home, the clergy will meet with you are your convenience and assist with the careful planning and pastoral care for you and your family. This is a very emotional time as we mark the end of your loved one’s earthly life while expressing our faith and hope in the resurrection.

Home Communion

Home Communion is offered to any parishioner who is unable to attend church due to illness mobility issues or other concerns. Once a month the clergy will make an appointment to come to your home to bring the sacrament of Holy Communion and share in a time of prayer and conversation. If you or a family member would like to avail of this ministry please contact the office and a time will be arranged with you.

Marriage

The Sacrament of Holy Matrimony is a Christian marriage offered to couples who wish to enter into a life-long commitment and union. If you plan to be married in the Anglican church you are required to give a 90-day notice, and complete a marriage preparation course with one of the clergy. All questions about the wedding will be answered during the course. Please contact the office to book your date.

Pastoral Care

Pastoral care at Ascension is a ‘ministry of being, not merely of doing’ – being with and listening to people in their times of confusion, joy, pain and recovery.  Our Clergy are dedicated to giving spiritual guidance or direction to all who seek it.

One of our programs, Parish Network Visitors (visitation of the shut-ins, the disabled and the lonely) is a dedicated ministry of individuals and clergy who stay in contact with anyone in our Parish Family who are shut-in. This group also assists in the All Soul’s Service and the Parish Education Day and other events that focus on fellowship and prayer. Please contact the Parish Office for more details to be part of this program or if you would just like to have a visit from this team.
