The Very Rev. William J. Bellamy, was appointed Interim Priest-in-Charge on January 6, 2023, but has been a member of the Parish of the Ascension since official retirement in 2003. After graduation from Queen’s College, he was ordained deacon in 1964 and priest in 1965. Over his lengthy ministry he has served as Assistant in the Parish of Channel and Rector in Labrador West and Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s. In the days of denominational education, he was Executive Director of the Federation of School Boards of Newfoundland and Labrador for five years—during which time he served as Hon. Asst. in this parish under our first Rector, the Rev. R. T. Mercer. After a year’s study at the University of Notre Dame he was appointed Anglican Chaplain at Memorial University and taught at Queen’s College. In 1993 he was appointed Rector of the Cathedral of St. John the Baptist and Dean of Eastern Newfoundland and Labrador. Following retirement in 2003 he has served occasionally as interim Priest-in-Charge in several parishes in this diocese, the Diocese of Algoma (Ontario), and the Diocese of Western Newfoundland, and also as Provost pro tem of Queen’s College. In pre-covid days he and his wife Derrice enjoyed travelling, and spending time at the cottage is always a joy.
